St. Sophia’s Cathedral, with its gold and green domes, contains ancient Byzantine mosaics. The baroque St. Andrew’s Church marks the start of Andriyivskyy Descent, a steep cobblestone street linking upper and lower Kiev. The Khanenko Museum houses eastern and western artworks, while the Pinchuk Art Centre focuses on contemporary works by emerging artists. The Motherland Monument or Rodina Mat is a massive sword-bearing statue sitting on top of a WWII museum. The Ukrainian National Museum of Chernobyl along with the Ukrainian Genocide Holodomor Memorial Museum and monuments at Babyn Yar Park honor victims of 20th-century tragedies.
