Gucci and Bottega Veneta may have been missing from the show schedule, but the big names at Milan Fashion Week still had a lot to say for Spring 2019. Standout moments included Prada’s raver-fantasy-meets-retro-schoolgirl collection, Fendi’s luxe athleisure, Missoni’s 65th birthday blowout and some epic ’90s supermodel comebacks, including Shalom Harlow at Versace and both Eva Herzigova and Helena Christensen at Dolce & Gabbana.
As proceedings in Paris are already underway, we’ll make this one short. Here’s a cheat sheet to the seven trends that came out on top in Milan.
Embellishments
The allure of shiny details, appliqués and intricate embroidery wasn’t lost on Italian designers this time around in Milan — and there was a style to suit every taste. Key pushers of the trend include Versace, Prada, Roberto Cavalli and Philipp Plein.
Print — and lots of it
Along with embellishment, mixed prints were just about everywhere — and Jeremy Scott’s latest Moschino collection had it all. Think brash stripes, painterly strokes and lavish headgear reminiscent of outré ’80s couture. Plus, Versace went all in on power clashing with some very fun results — though not for the faint of heart.
Fishnet
From fishnet to fisherman’s, netting of all sorts has emerged as a major trend for Spring 2019. In Milan, Creative Director Paul Andrew sent roomy net dresses with extra-long tassels down the Salvatore Ferragamo runway, and Etro gave hats the net treatment.
Polka dot
Designers went mad for polka dots all around the city. The timeless print showed up in ’50s siren form at Dolce & Gabbana, Marni and Fendi, while Miuccia Prada paired sheer polka dot dresses with modern boy shorts at her namesake show.
Plastic fantastic
Slick coats and dresses slid into a heavy handful of collections, too. Max Mara’s cinched-in version of the trend in khaki will require a polishing cloth and a certain amount of confidence to pull it off. Fendi covered its transparent plastic coats in the signature F logo print that millennials have been going gaga over.
Into the wild
Are animal prints the new black? Designers in Milan certainly think so. Go all out in head-to-toe Roberto Cavalli or pair a Simonetta Ravizza dress with fresh white sneakers for a more street-friendly take for Spring 2019.
Pastels
Don’t say we didn’t warn you: Pastels are here to stay for next season, as Alberta Ferretti, Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander and many more captured the trend with aplomb.
